Referce is an independent international research and advocacy collective bringing together researchers, practitioners, and individuals interested in understanding environmental challenges and their social, political, cultural, economic, and scientific dimensions.
We work across disciplinary and geographical boundaries to develop, exchange, and communicate research on environmental issues and the complex relationships between people, societies, institutions, and the natural world.
Our work is primarily conducted through international and online collaboration. We bring together perspectives from different fields and forms of knowledge in order to examine environmental questions that cannot be adequately understood through a single discipline or methodology.
Our research
Environmental challenges are inherently interdisciplinary. Questions concerning climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems, environmental governance, pollution, resource use, sustainability, and environmental justice are connected to broader questions of economics, politics, sociology, public policy, history, geography, technology, culture, and human behaviour.
Our research therefore explores environmental issues from multiple perspectives.
Our work may draw on approaches from:

We are particularly interested in research that connects disciplinary perspectives and makes visible relationships that may otherwise remain separated within conventional academic boundaries.
From research to public understanding
We believe that research can contribute not only to academic discussion but also to wider understanding of environmental challenges.
Our activities may include independent research, collaborative research projects, literature and evidence reviews, research communication, publications, discussions, seminars, workshops, online events, and collaboration with researchers and practitioners.
Where appropriate, we seek to make research and evidence accessible beyond specialist academic audiences while maintaining a commitment to intellectual independence, transparency, and careful engagement with available evidence.
An international and collaborative approach
Referce.org is international in orientation and works primarily through online collaboration. Our members and collaborators may be based in different countries and may come from different academic, professional, and community backgrounds.
We welcome interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration across geographical, institutional, and disciplinary boundaries.
Our collective approach allows researchers and contributors to develop projects independently while benefiting from discussion with people working on related questions in other fields and contexts.
Independence
Referce is an independent collective. Our research and activities are not presented as representing the position of any university, government, political party, corporation, or other institution unless explicitly stated in relation to a particular collaboration or project.
We aim to maintain intellectual independence in the selection of research questions, interpretation of evidence, and communication of our work.
The collective does not claim institutional status, accreditation, or affiliation with a university or public authority unless such a relationship is explicitly identified.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to contribute to informed interdisciplinary discussion of environmental issues by supporting research, exchange, collaboration, and public engagement.
We are particularly interested in questions where environmental processes intersect with human systems—for example, how environmental change affects societies, how institutions respond to ecological pressures, how environmental policies are developed and implemented, and how different communities understand and experience environmental change.
Through our work, we seek to:
- develop and support interdisciplinary research;
- encourage collaboration across fields and geographical boundaries;
- facilitate exchange between researchers and practitioners;
- contribute evidence and analysis to environmental discussions;
- communicate research in accessible ways;
- support independent inquiry into emerging environmental questions;
